What is primary health?

Primary healthcare relates to health care normally received in the community, often from your general practice. Primary health care covers a widening array of health care and health promoting services including health education, disease prevention and treatment, screening, general health care, minor surgery, as well as many other services. Primary health care may also be services provided in Hauora, schools, nurse clinics and elsewhere.

A growing range of health services are now delivered in the primary and community setting. This range will grow as primary health care develops the capability to deliver such services.

Check with your general practice or primary health provider as to what services are available to you.
